Nick Frost Cast in 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special
Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost will be joining Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman for the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas Special.
Production on the episode has already started in Cardiff at BBC Wales Roath Lock Studios, with other notable British thespians joining the ensemble: Natalie Gumede (Coronation Street), Faye Marsay (The White Queen), Nathan McMullen (Misfits) and Michael Troughton (son of Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor), will also take part in the holiday extravaganza, the details of which are being kept closely guarded. However, rumors state that the Doctor Who Christmas Special could see the departure of Jenna Coleman from her role as companion Clara Oswald. Neither Coleman nor showrunner Steven Moffat have commented on the speculation, but Christmas specials, in recent years, have proven momentous. Just last year, the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas Special featured the departure of Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor, and the arrival of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth.
Naturally, Frost is stoked to be joining the series: “I'm so thrilled to have been asked to guest in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, I'm such a fan of the show. The read-through was very difficult for me; I wanted to keep stuffing my fingers into my ears and scream 'No spoilers!' Every day on set I’ve had to silence my internal fan-boy squeals!"
Moffat adds: “Frost at Christmas - it just makes sense! I worked with Nick on the Tintin movie many years ago and it's a real pleasure to lure him back to television for a ride on the TARDIS.”
The 2014 Doctor Who Christmas Special, written by Moffat and directed by Strike Back helmer Paul Wilmshurst, will premiere on BBC One and BBC America this Christmas. I can only hope Frost's role makes use of his considerable comedic chops. However, it would be pretty interesting to see him take on a more dramatic role, as he certainly has a greater range of talent than he gets the chance to show in many of his movies (hell, he was fantastic in The World's End). This is a great addition to the cast, and should make for a fantastic Christmas Special.
