News Corp threatens to pull Fox off the air due to Aereo

By The Associated Press ·

LOL! I hope this happens! Another executive shooting off his mouth like an idiot. I actually signed on to Aereo a few days ago when they won a case against the broadcast networks. And now this guy just gave them even more free publicity. American Idol on cable? Fox is going to have to BEG for viewers. What a joke. — Rickey

News Corp executive threatens to convert free-to-air Fox into pay TV channel to thwart Aereo

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A top executive with the owner of the Fox broadcast network is threatening to convert the network to a pay-TV channel if Internet startup Aereo continues to "steal" Fox's over-the-air signal and sell it to consumers without paying for rights.

News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey made the comments Monday at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, just a week after an appeals court said Aereo could continue its $8-a-month service. Aereo takes broadcast signals for free from the air and sends them to subscribers' computers, tablets and smartphones.

Although all broadcasters send out free-to-air signals, they usually require payment when those signals are retransmitted by a cable or satellite company.

Fox owns 27 TV stations that thrive on such signals. Carey didn't explain how they might be affected.
