New Study Ranks "Richest" and "Poorest" TV Shows by Viewer Income
So what do "rich" people watch? What do "poor" people watch?
Well, a controversial new study from The Wrap looks to answer the question by surveying the median income of primetime viewers this season on the four biggest broadcast networks, excluding sports, specials, or awards ceremonies. The study reveals that ABC, NBC and CBS split the wealth with the top three shows among high-income viewership -- Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, and The Amazing Race, three shows with a high level of critical acclaim.
“It’s not too surprising that higher income viewers are more likely to watch programs that are critically acclaimed and contenders for industry awards like the Golden Globes and Emmys,” said Brad Adgate, senior vice president of Research at Horizon Media.
This probably explains why critical duds like Family Guy, Bones, and Undercover Boss are on the low end of the spectrum. However, the low-ranking for shows such as Family Guy, The Simpsons, and Bob's Burgers makes sense, since animated shows skew towards younger, less financially-stable audiences.
Of course, this doesn't really explain why a similarly youth-skewing show like Glee is on the "richest" shows list (although, admittedly, at the very bottom), but I'm not entirely sure what the point was in doing this study in the first place other than to provide a macabre talking point. But hey, I like yapping, so hit up the comments and add your thoughts after checking out the full lists of the "richest" and "poorest" shows on TV below:
