Sailor Moon is on its way back, and sooner rather than later.
The official website for the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Project has formally announced that the new Sailor Moon anime will premiere this July, and will stream worldwide via the Niconico service.
The new anime, based on creator Naoko Takeuchi's manga, was announced in the Summer 2012 for premiere in the Summer of 2013. However, the project ultimately faced development issues, and was delayed an entire year. Thus, Summer 2014 will now be the summer of Sailor Moon, as the new series will have its simultaneous global premiere.
This news matches up with the earlier statements by Dallas Middaugh, general manager of Kodansha USA, the manga's North American publisher: Middaugh confirmed at New York Comic Con this past October that the new Sailor Moon anime would stream worldwide on Niconico, adding that the series would be subtitled in 10 languages.
The resurrected Sailor Moon will be directed by Munehisa Sakai (One Piece) with a script by Y?ji Kobayashi (Saint Seiya Omega) and produced by Toei Animation. Last, but not least, the theme song will be performed by female pop group Momoiro Clover Z, one of the more popular Japanese idol groups working today.
The premiere date in July has not been confirmed, but at the very least, worldwide audiences won't have to wait for a sub/dub in their language once it does premiere, thanks to the simultaneous worldwide release.
