New Girl - Injured - Recap
If you would have told me that I could learn a serious life lesson from New Girl, I would have laughed in your face. Things would have gotten real FAST. Much like Zooey Deschanel's transformation to realness in this episode, I found myself scratching my head and contemplating life. Well, it's not that serious, but seriously, I learned a lesson tonight.
Amidst the crazy Jess and Nick shenanigans, the comedic one-liners and ridiculous skinny dipping, this episode was able to drive home the devastating reality of life. Unlike, Glee--which at times is contrived and preachy--New Girl tackles on of the toughest issues in a completely hilarious and lighthearted way.

The episode opens on a football game between Jess, Nick, Schmidt, and Winston. It quickly turns awry when Jess, of all people, tackles Nick to the ground, and he injures himself. The crew urges Nick to go to the doctor, but as he keeps telling them, he never goes to the doctor for anything (mostly because he doesn't have insurance). Jess, of course, has a sure fire solution. She offers to take him to a friend of hers who is a doctor. Come to find out, her friend is a gynecologist.
While at the OBGYN, Jess finds out that Nick has a lump in this thyroid gland. This spirals the group out of control with worry. Schmidt and Winston do a little "research" and come to the conclusion that Nick has cancer in a hilariously sweet scene at Nick's bar. Needless to say, Nick gets wasted and that's when things get "real" in this episode.
In a completely touching way, Nick is battling with the things he's done in life. Jess, at his urging, gets real for a second and questions what has he done in life. As fans can recall, Nick can never make up his mind or truly live life. The gang then decides to take a midnight rendezvous to the beach for some skinny dipping fun. Nick, wary at first, charges full steam into the cold water, revealing that, in fact, he has changed. This is where the episode gets even "realer"--as Nick emerges from the water, freezing, and begins ranting about not being OK.

Not gonna lie, I've grown attached to these characters and teared up a bit during an emotional scene between Schmidt and Cece. Schmidt, of course, is only thinking about her butt leaving an imprint in the sand, but Cece reveals that her father died when she was 12.
The next morning, Nick, Schmidt, Jess, CeCe, and Winston awaken on the beach and head off to Nick's ultrasound. The findings? Nick is OK! Phew, he dodged that bullet. Nick, not having insurance, plans to pay for the procedure with cash, change, and a check that may not clear. No need to worry, however, as his best friends split the bill for him. Sweet.
