Netflix Buys Rights to 'The Blacklist' for $2 Million Per Episode
Netflix is snatching up the streaming rights to one of NBC's most popular dramas, but they're paying a pretty penny to do so: Netflix has acquired The Blacklist for a whopping $2 million per episode. That's a cost of $44 million for the first season alone!
This represents the largest per-episode fee paid by any subscription-based video-on-demand company for a single television show. Yet while this is a huge coup for Netflix, it's an even bigger win for Sony TV: while Netflix has the first rights to stream the show, Sony TV will still be able to shop The Blacklist to broadcast and cable networks for syndication, potentially doubling their profits from the series. In short, The Blacklist went from one of the 2013-2014 season's most successful new shows, to becoming the 2014-2015 season's most lucrative. Given its popularity, it's likely that The Blacklist will only become more of a moneymaker for NBC, Sony TV, and Netflix.
