All-around showman Neil Patrick Harris is making his return to the Broadway stage. The decision comes not long after his tremendously successful stint as host of the Tony Awards last week.
Next spring, Harris will star in the latest adaptation of the stage/cinematic cult favorite Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
“I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s heels,” said Harris, last seen on stage in the New York Philharmonic’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. “It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can’t wait to begin the journey.”
“Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?” said John Cameron Mitchell, who wrote the book and starred in the original stage and film productions of the popular work. Composer Stephen Trask added his thoughts, saying, “It’s like you’re putting together a fantasy rock band and Paul McCartney agrees to play bass.”
When the show first premiered off-off-Broadway in 1997, it won critical acclaim throughout the theater community, earning a transfer to Off-Broadway, where it won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
The new take on Hedwig will open on Broadway in spring 2014.
