NBC Renews 'Parks and Rec', 'Grimm', and Two More
NBC is locking in its lineup of returning shows for next season, and the early renewals are for three dramas and one comedy.
Grimm will continue to hold down Fridays for the network, proving to be one of the few shows on TV to actually make Friday work. In truth, it's one of NBC's biggest successes of the past several years, so a fourth season was all but certain. The other two dramas, Chicago Fire and spinoff Chicago PD, are also solid performers for the network, so their respective renewals make perfect sense.
Lastly, given its critical acclaim and awards season attention, with star Amy Poehler recently winning her first Golden Globe for the show, Parks and Recreation is a common sense choice for renewal. Granted, its ratings are still pretty low, even for an NBC comedy (it delivers a 1.1 in the key demo), but the show has a pretty big upside as it has a ton of episodes already, and will have even more episodes now that can be sold into syndication and into multimedia streaming platforms.
No word yet on any other renewals, but if I had to guess, I would expect (and hope) Community would find a way to come back for at least one more season. Everything else, I would argue, is at risk. Other than stuff that's already been renewed, like The Blacklist. Or shows with no threat of going anywhere, like The Voice. Should be an interesting cancellation season though, as a ton of dramas and comedies are going to be on the bubble this year, from Revolution to About A Boy. I don't expect they'll all be canceled, but I expect far fewer existing series to survive than even last year (where NBC just totally cleaned house).
So did these four shows deserve renewal? Sound off in the comments!
