The first major renewal of the 2013-2014 broadcast season has been confirmed, and it's not even for a primetime show!
NBC has renewed daytime soap Days of Our Lives for two years, extending the show's run through September 2016. This will take Days of Our Lives past its 50th anniversary in November 2015.
Of course, this comes just days after longtime cast member Alison Sweeney announced she would be leaving the series after over 20 years in the role of Sami Brady.
“Days of Our Lives continues to be a fan favorite for the daytime audience, and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 50th season,” said Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment. “Days has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively due to the hard work of the producers, writers, cast and crew who have worked tirelessly to make Days the ratings success it is today."
Steve Kent, Senior Executive VP of Programming for Sony Pictures Television, added: “Having won the Emmy Award for outstanding daytime drama, Days of Our Lives continues to deliver on its legacy of quality storytelling.” Kent continued, “We appreciate NBC’s continued support and are excited to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary with our generations of dedicated fans.”
The renewal makes perfect sense, given that Days of Our Lives is having its best season in three years in the female 18-49 demographic, in addition to posting its largest total viewership in at least four years.
So settle in, because you've got at least another 24 months of daytime soapy goodness.
