NBC Renews 'The Blacklist' for a Second Season

After finishing its fall run with some of the strongest ratings the network has seen for a freshman series in a long time, NBC has made the decision to renew The Blacklist for a 22-episode second season.

Of course, while the decision to renew The Blacklist for a second season might seem a bit early, it's also kind of a no-brainer. The crime thriller starring James Spader is the No. 1 drama and the No. 2 scripted series on the Big 4 broadcast networks in the key 18-49 demo. In addition, The Blacklist is the No. 1 new show in total viewers, as well as NBC’s most watched new drama in 19 years, besting the short-lived Earth 2 in 1994.

The Blacklist is also a powerful force in DVR numbers, as its November 4 episode delivered the biggest increase in total viewers from live-plus same-day viewing to live-plus-7 in television history, growing by close to 7 million (from 10.337 million to 16.926 million). The series also draws the highest ad price among new series this year.

“The success of ‘The Blacklist’ demonstrates that inspired storytelling is alive and well in broadcast television,” said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. “With gratitude to both our partners at Sony Pictures Television and our NBC development executives who took a great script and shepherded it into a great series, I hope that Red Reddington never runs out of names to bring down on his list!”

For once, I have no problem agreeing with Bob Greenblatt. (I'm still mad about Smash though)
