NBC Developing 'Say Anything' TV Series
John Cusack pretty much made his name as Lloyd Dobler in 1989's Say Anything, cementing his place in pop culture history with the iconic scene in which Lloyd lifts a boombox over his head blaring Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" to Diane Court, the girl he loves.
Now NBC wants in on the nostalgia, as the network is developing a series based on the Cameron Crowe-directed film. NBC has given a script commitment to the half-hour, single-camera comedy series from 20th Century Fox TV and Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment. Kaplan (The Neighbors) will executive produce alongside Justin Adler (Better Off Ted), who is writing the script.
The show would pick up a decade after the movie, and the romance that served as the basis for its story. The official synopsis: "Lloyd Dobler has long since been dumped by Diane Court and life hasn’t exactly turned out like he thought. But when Diane surprisingly returns home, Lloyd is inspired to ‘dare to be great’ once again, get Diane back and reboot his life."
Following the success of its other big comedy feature adaptation, About a Boy, this makes as much sense as any series, even if I'm not sure anyone is clamoring for a series that basically wipes out whatever happy future viewers might have imagined in their heads after the credits rolled on the original.
