What if Elizabeth Smart had decided to become a justice-seeking vigilante following her infamous 2002 kidnapping and subsequent rescue in 2003? NBC is exploring that premise with a new drama.
The network has put the new series One Kick into development. The drama is based on an upcoming book series by Chelsea Cain, the best-selling author behind the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell book series. One Kick is centered on Kick Lannigan, who made national news as a the victim of a child abduction. After Kick was rescued, she becomes determined never to be victimized again, and receives a Batman-esque training in martial arts and firearms, gaining additional help in the form of high tech gadgets and resources from a mysterious billionaire benefactor. Trained and armed, Kick hits the streets to protect the weak and defeat those who would prey upon them.
The script comes from film scribe Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain), who will executive produce alongside former Dexter EP Sara Colleton.
No news on when the series is expected to begin shooting, but the first novel in the One Kick book series will be published next summer by Simon & Schuster.
