Exclusive: My Interview with Corbin Bleu from In The Heights

Corbin Bleu In The Heights Interview.jpg

So I followed Abuela Claudia's advice which is Paciencia Y Fe (Patience and Faith) -- and it worked! I finally got to interview Corbin Bleu from the Broadway musical "In The Heights" and the "High School Musical" movies. I was turned down initially, but I patiently followed up and I got 30 great minutes with Corbin at the Richard Rodgers Theatre last Tuesday.

I was so nervous. That's all I remember when I arrived at the theater. It felt like I only had three questions, and it took all my energy just to keep it together. Thankfully, Corbin was really nice. He helped me out with my video camera setup and was just laid back about the whole thing. It's amazing that he had just finished 2 hours of rehearsal for the day, and he went straight to talk to me. After a few minutes in, I felt like we were just having a conversation and not an interview.

I think I got some good stuff. Corbin is dating someone now outside of showbiz. He still wants to do more films after his stint on Broadway. He's a foodie. He also told me about how he landed the role of Usnavi after his TV series "The Beautiful Life" was cancelled abruptly.

Corbin is playing Usnavi until August 17. However, he will be on vacation for a week from June 27 to July 4. If you ever watch "In The Heights" make sure to stop by the stage door to catch Corbin. He is always the last to leave signing autographs and posing for pictures. He accommodated all the fans during the times I waited outside.

"In The Heights" is one of my favorite musicals on Broadway right now and Corbin is really great in it. As I said in my review last January -- next to Lin-Manuel Miranda who created the role, Corbin is the best Usnavi that I've seen.

Thanks Corbin for the great interview!
