Modern Family - The One That Got Away - Season Finale Recap
The family scrambles to throw Jay the perfect birthday dinner after last year's fiasco. Claire and Mitch decide for their present to recreate a childhood photograph of the two of them in their old backyard. When no one is home at their old house, they break into the backyard. Before they can take the picture, an angry dog chases them up into their old tree house. They sit up there trapped without a phone while they watch their car get towed. It's pretty lucky for them that they have a bottle of wine to help ease the pain.
Phil runs into his old college rival at the mall and once again fails to appear cool. When Gloria and Lily meet up with Phil to shop, Phil notices that the mall patrons mistake the two of them for a couple. He decides to use this to his advantage when his nemesis shows up at the store again. Phil can't help but show off his hot fake wife in her new tight dress. Surprisingly, his friend was more impressed with Claire back in the day. Phil should feel like a goof and a bad husband right about now.
Jay just wanted to spend his birthday day out on a lake fishing somewhere. Instead, his day is spent helping his lunatic family members. Cam is annoyed with Lily and drops her off with Gloria so he can go pick up Jay's cake alone. Once there, he receives a frantic call from Manny asking for help wooing a fellow sixth grade girl who enjoys sports. While in the bakery, Cam gives Manny word by word instructions on how to win the girl over. This gets him kicked out of the bakery once the customers think an episode of To Catch A Predator is about to be filmed. Jay saves the day by buying his own cake. After having to stop to pick up the dog for Gloria, he has to rescue his kids from their drunken tree house predicament. The party is a relatively small success but when the family is together that's all that matters. Cam helping Manny out with sports makes him realize how much he wants a son. Little does he know, Mitch is thinking the same thing. Together they decide the time is right to adopt another child.
