Modern Family - Run For Your Wife - Recap

Modern Family - Run For Your Wife

(Here's Desi's recap of tonight's episode of Modern Family "Run For Your Wife")

I started this week's episode of Modern Family with "In the Moonlight" from last week still stuck in my head. Thanks, writers.

This week, a school fight between Manny and Luke bring Claire and Phil to the boys' principal's office, where they meet Gloria and Jay. They reveal that the reason they were fighting was because Manny was referring to Luke as his nephew. This offends Luke because they are the same age. Their principal sends them back to class and tells the parents that it's a home issue the family needs to sort out. Claire and Gloria react by talking about each other or insulting the dress of the other child. ("He dresses like a count," Claire says of Manny. How does a count dress?) Phil says to sweep it under the rug. Jay wants to watch football.

Apparently, Cameron also wants to watch football. He's excited for the barbeque and football game at Jay's, but Mitchell wants to skip it. We find out a little bit about their history: they've gone on a pickling retreat, Mitchell likes scrapbooking... and Cameron was a star football player in college. He gets decked out in a team jersey and facepaint while Mitchell attempts to learn something about the teams playing so he won't be completely lost during the game. Except that his idea of "learning about football" is a lot like mine, and he only learns one player's name.

In the spirit of getting along, Luke and Manny start telling the family why they were making fun of each other. One of the things, Luke says, is that his mom says Gloria is a "cole digger." Gloria asks when Claire said this, and Luke rattles off a list of instances. Gloria leaves to hide in her room for the remainder of the barbeque, but Phil won't have it. He comes in to patch things up, and in the process, gets covered in Gloria's underwear. Claire is not pleased with this discovery when she comes to apologize to Gloria.

Meanwhile, Jay (who has had his confidence shaken by Claire's inferrence that a beautiful woman couldn't be with him just based on his looks) approaches Mitchell and Cameron for advice. "You're like women," he says, and asks them if he is attractive. Mitchell tries not to vomit, Jay prefaces by saying "I know I'm no Erik Estrada," and Cameron expresses the many ways he finds Jay hot.

Gloria finally agrees to forgive Claire... but only if she will prove she's really sorry. Gloria expects her to do this by jumping in the pool with all her clothes on. The whole family gathers around to watch, and when Claire finally jumps, she's followed by the rest of the family.

The episode closes with Claire and Mitchell watching in horror as Cameron and Jay execute some football moves in the living room. Maybe Mitchell should be glad he met Cameron first.
