Modern Family - Mother's Day - Recap
Gloria and Claire plan a Mother's Day hike with the kids to spend the day together. Hiking up a dirt trail is of course the last thing the kids would want to be doing and they spend the hike whining from beginning to end. Claire grows tired of hearing the kids complaining and proposes to leave them behind and goes off to finish the hike with Gloria. Once to the top, Claire admits to Gloria that sometimes she just feels like hitting her kids for the fun of it. She eggs Gloria on to get her to say something similar about Manny. Gloria initially refuses but eventually admits that he can be persnickety and can write mediocre poetry. Gasp. THE HORROR. Unfortunately for Gloria, Manny is behind her listening to the whole thing.
Mitchell surprises Cam with breakfast in bed as the beginning of a day devoted to him. Cam is offended because it is Mother's day and he's tired of being looked at as the woman in the relationship. The mother. Things quickly get worse for Cam when they bring Lily to the park for a group playdate and all the mother's ask him to pose in their picture of all the moms. While walking away, a kid asks Cam to throw him a football. Cam loses his temper and grabs it to prove his manhood and ends up knocking an old man off a bike. LOL.
While the girls and kids are on their hike, Phil and Jay are at home in charge of cooking the Mother's Day dinner. Jay is serious about following his mother's recipe and Phil's jokes are wearing on him. When Phil picks up the recipe book to read the next ingredient, an old poem Jay wrote for his mother as a child falls out of it. As Phil is reading it, Jay starts to tear up. Things immediately get awkward and Phil tries to hug, hold, and caress Jay who is adamant that it was the onions causing the tears. The kids refuse to apologize to Claire for whining on the hike because they feel it will only give her more power over them. But when Jay breaks down talking about his mom at the dinner table, the entire family hugs.
