Modern Family - Hawaii - Recap

When you think of a week long vacation in Hawaii, you think of relaxation. Great beaches, fancy resorts, crazy shirts, it's where everyone wants to go to have fun. It's everyone's goal this week to relax and have fun but things don't quite go as planned. Jay gets a phone call from his brother on his birthday and instead of feeling good about it, gets an unexpected jolt of reality. He realizes he's the same age his dad was when he died and starts to panic about his health. He vows to spend the rest of his trip getting in shape instead of laying by the pool eating cheeseburgers. Also very tempting. I don't blame him, it looked good. And this is coming from someone who doesn't eat hamburgers. He drags Gloria along with him on his new trek to fitness and she's less than thrilled. He overdoes it somewhere between working out at the gym and rowing an outrigger and his back goes out while he's in a hammock. He gets stuck and it's up to Phil to get him out. Yeah. Phil ends up on top of him and they embrace and cuddle for a sweet amount of time.

Cam and Mitchell have plans to spend their vacation separated from the others by exploring the more adventurous things the island has to offer. They're that couple that spend their days visiting museums, and lavender gardens, and wineries, things like that. Up until today, Mitchell was under the impression that Cam enjoyed doing these things with him. Cam has me fooled and is actually just like Jay. He enjoys sipping colorful drinks and getting his feet massaged. How cute is Lily in that hat? He convinces Mitchell to abandon his need for adventure fulfillment and join him by the pool. While walking through the hotel, they talk about their differences and get distracted, accidentally leaving Lily locked in the elevator. As you can imagine, Cam has abandoned all inhibitions and his running frantically through the hotel screeching in a voice higher than my Pomeranian. When you're done chuckling you see that Lily is fine and rescued by Auntie Gloria. It doesn't take long before they lose her yet again in a banana plantation.

Phil has made it his mission to turn this family vacation into a romantic honeymoon for him and Claire but can't seem to make it work. Claire is constantly distracted about her kids and all the mischief they're able to get into while left on their own. As she should be. Luke gets kicked out of his room with Manny and Haley gets drunk and spends the rest of her vacation hungover. That was fast, who gave her the drinks? She looks like she's 12. Frustrated with her lack of enthusiasm for relaxation, Phil tries his best to get rid of the kids before planning a sweet little ceremony for Claire. The episode ends as Claire and Phil renew their wedding vows with Jay hobbling down the aisle.
