No sooner does a cynical nation overcome the wearying enterprise of Valentine's Day than the news of true love's demise comes to light. Because if Hollywood actors can't make it work, what hope in hell have the rest of us got?

Yes, it's true. Actors Jason Segel and Michelle Williams have split.

The stars of "Oz the Great and Powerful" and the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" ended their year-long relationship earlier this month, though news is only just being released now. The breakup is cited as being the result of the increasingly-difficult, long-distance nature of the partnership, since life isn't at all like the movie "Going the Distance" (or maybe it is, I never saw it. Do Drew Barrymore and Justin Long stay together?).

Williams, 32, lives in New York, while Segel, 33, is based primarily in Los Angeles, making the relationship largely unmanageable. Over the past year, the couple was frequently spotted enjoying one another's company with Williams' 7-year-old daughter by Heath Ledger, Matilda.

The couple's breakup "was mutual," an insider told Us Weekly. "It's a sad moment. They respect each other."

Well, if you can't have love, respect is the next best thing. That, and a good scotch.
