Michael Phelps Arrested for DUI in Baltimore

A mere 24 hours after Amanda Bynes was collared for the same offense, yet another celebrity is facing DUI charges: early this morning, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence in Baltimore.

At approximately 1:40 am, the 22-time Olympic medalist was arrested by the Maryland Transit Authority. Phelps was driving 84 MPH in a 45 MPH zone, which was the reason for his stop. The Marilyn Transit Authority released a statement on the arrest:

"A white 2014 Land Rover entered the radar's area of influence at excessive speed. The officer followed the vehicle northbound on I-95 through the tunnel and initiated an enforcement stop. Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests. Mr. Phelps was cooperative throughout the process."

Phelps was charged with DUI, driving with excessive speeds and crossing double lanes. Although he was eventually released, it's expected Phelps will be in hot water since this isn't exactly his first DUI arrest. Phelps served 18 months probation for his first DUI back in 2004 when the Olympian, at age 19, was arrested after running a stop sign, again in Maryland.

Olympian or not, it's doubtful the state of Maryland is going to let this one go. Nor should they. If Phelps is going to continue to be this irresponsible, he needs to face harsher consequences. He could have injured himself or others, and this kind of behavior needs to be nipped in the bud. But what do you think? Sound off in the comments!
