Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Video to Be Released in 3D

The late Michael Jackson's movie ambitions are finally being realized. Before his death, Jackson had planned to include a 3D version of the "Thriller" music video as a segment in his This Is It tour. But the idea was never seen through to completion.

Until now.

After settling a dispute with Jackson's estate, director John Landis has come to an agreement to release the "Thriller" music video in 3D. While no official details have been revealed, Landis already has ideas in mind for the release.

“It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen,” Landis said. Along with the 3D upgrade, the video is expected to release on Blu-ray for the first time. There is even word that a video game might be in the works, even though Michael Jackson properties don't have the best track-record as video game adaptations (have we learned nothing from Moonwalker?!).

Made on a reported budget of $500,000, the 14-minute music video was a phenomenon from the moment it premiered on MTV in December 1983. It's widely considered to be one of the greatest music videos of all-time, if not THE greatest, and it's also credited with kickstarting the music video as an art form and promotional tool. It's so iconic that "Thriller" was the first music video inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library Of Congress. Hell, it still holds up thirty years on, not just as a music video but as a short film as well.

Hopefully, release details are unveiled soon. With Halloween right around the corner, there is no better time for a killer thriller tonight.
