We're in our final season of How I Met Your Mother, and there are roughly nine episodes left. Thus, the assumption was that there would have to be more than a few hiatuses if the series was going to last until May. But apparently, we now know why CBS was burning through the first half of the final season so quickly: the comedy is ending in March.

CBS announced today that the long-running comedy will wrap its ninth and final season on Monday, March 31 with an hour-long series finale. Following the finale, CBS will premiere the new comedy Friends With Better Lives at 9/8c.

In addition to announcing the finale air date for How I Met Your Mother, CBS has also named the time slot successor for the comedy: beginning on April 14, 2 Broke Girls will take over the Monday, 8/7c time slot, to be followed by Friends With Better Lives, which settles into its regular 8:30/7:30c time slot on April 7.

So while this all means we'll be saying goodbye to Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall and Lily sooner rather than later, at least there will be fewer hiatuses.
