'The Mentalist' To End After Seventh Season

Well, I guess it's time for Simon Baker and co. to hit the classified ads: CBS has confirmed that The Mentalist is coming to an end.

The shorter, 13-episode seventh season will premiere on Sunday, November 30 at 9:00 PM ET, taking over The Good Wife time slot until January 4, at which point The Mentalist will move to its new time slot on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM ET. The show will air in that time slot until its two-hour series finale on February 18.

No word right now on whether or not The Mentalist will pull a Southland and find a new network. But I wouldn't really hold my breath. Southland wasn't quite so long in the tooth when it found a new home on TNT, and although The Mentalist has been a decent ratings performer for CBS over the years, I just don't think a network like TNT needs another procedural right now. That said, they did make a big to-do about acquiring the syndication rights to The Mentalist, so if TNT does choose to pick it up, the network will at least be sticking with something familiar to them. If nothing else, they could certainly do a lot worse than The Mentalist.
