Men's Marathon - London 2012 Olympics - Results
It's the final day of competition at the London 2012 Olympics, which means it's time for the Men's Marathon.
Here are your medal results:
The Men's marathon is one of the oldest events in the games and it has become tradition to run it on the final day of competition. The awarding of the medals will kick off this evening's closing ceremonies.
The London 2012 marathon course is the standard Olympic distance of 26 miles 385 yards and consists of one short lap of 3.571 kilometres (2.219 miles) followed by three longer laps of 12.875 kilometres (8.0 miles). The course begins on "The Mall" and travels past several famous London landmarks. Due to logistical reasons the course breaks with the tradition of ending in Olympic stadium and instead the start/finish line is near the Victoria Memorial.
As they often are, the Kenyan runners were the favorites for gold in this race, but Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda made a bold move at the 23 mile mark to take a lead that he would maintain for the remainder of the race. Kenyans Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich would try to chase him down, but they had to settle for silver and bronze. American Mebrahtom Keflezighi, in his last Olympic marathon at the age of 37, finished in fourth place. A great effort by all involved.
Kiprotich's medal is the first Olympic medal ever won by Uganda in the marathon event.
Results:
Gold: Stephen Kiprotich - Uganda
Silver: Abel Kirui - Kenya
Bronze: Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich - Kenya
Congratulations to all the medal winners!
