Men's Cross Country Mountain Bike - London 2012 Olympics - Results
Todd Wells was the top U.S. competitor in the Men's Cross Country Mountain Bike race at the London 2012 Olympics. The London games are winding down in style with yet another exciting finish to an event. The lead changed hands three or four times in the final stretch of this hour and a half cycling race and came down to an all out sprint to the finish.
Here are your medal results:
The cross country races usually end more like the women's version of this event did, with one competitor clearly out in front on the final lap. The Men's race would be different. Half way through the final lap, there were still three men with a chance to win gold. Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic, Nino Schurter of Switzerland and Marco Aurelio Fontana of Italy.
Fontana would eventually fall off the pace, leaving Kulhavy & Schurter to battle it out for gold. Defending world champion, Kulhavy would take the lead, but Schurter would make a bold move to pass him. Schurter maintained the lead for several minutes, but then it was Kulhavy's turn to make an aggressive move to pass Schurter. He would hold the lead all the way to the finish line, though Schurter fought hard for it, sprinting all the way.
Todd Wells would finish in 10th place for Team USA.
It was a very exciting finish and an impressive effort by both men. After 30+ kilometers of racing over very technically challenging terrain, to still have enough left in the tank for that kind of effort is truly a feat of Olympic proportion.
Results:
Gold: Jaroslav Kulhavy - Czech Republic
Silver: Nino Schurter - Switzerland
Bronze: Marco Aurelio Fontana - Italy
Congratulations to all the medal winners!
