Preparation

Melissa explains that, with her Spanish singing, she wants to show versatility. Blake says that Melissa can do anything she thinks about doing, and those types of singers do well in competitions like these. For her part, Melissa tells Usher he was the reason she tried out for the show, recalling having met him once at a concert and vowing she would meet him again.

Melissa has chosen “Halo” by Beyonce, and while it sounds pretty, Usher warns her about breath control and rounding out her sound. Much like with Harry Connick, Jr. on American Idol, I don’t always know what Usher is talking about on the technical side of things, but it’s clear the man knows his stuff, and takes his job very seriously. And I appreciate the hell out of that, since it would be incredibly easy for him to just take the paycheck and phone it in.

	Adam Levine: Adam notes that her song choice was a risk, but adds that people can’t succeed on a show like this unless they take risks.
	Shakira: Shakira is positive on the performance, but she’s mostly positive on Melissa herself.
	Usher: Usher thinks Melissa has come a long way, and hopes that no matter what his decision is, she’s ready to continue in music. So either Usher is being coy, or he’s setting her up for the likelihood that she won’t go through unless the next three singers fail to deliver.
	Blake Shelton: Blake says he can’t really rag on her for the performance, since he was listening to it as if it were her own song, and thinks it succeeded by those parameters.
