'Maze Runner' Sequel Announced, Release Date Set

With the success of The Maze Runner at the box office this past weekend, debuting at No. 1 with $32.5 million, it makes sense that a sequel is in the works. Hell, it makes even more sense that 20th Century Fox would want to put it on the fast track for release. In just one year's time, we'll have a new Maze Runner film to storm the box office.

The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, based on the second book in James Dashner's series, is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 18, 2015.

The Maze Runner is already kicking off the fall movie season in a big way, as it's also a pretty big hit overseas as well, earning $37.6 million from 50 markets. The movie's worldwide total for its debut weekend is an impressive $81.5 million, over double the film's $34 million budget. Starring Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien, The Maze Runner centers on a young man who "wakes up with no memory inside the center of a giant maze, an area known as The Glade, surrounded by other teen boys who likewise can't remember anything." The maze contains danger and mystery around every corner, as the youths must unravel the mystery of the maze while also remaining alive -- all of which is far easier said than done.
