Matthew Perry is best known for his work on NBC with Friends, but he's now making his way over to CBS with a pretty big project in which he'll have a fairly huge role.
Perry is set to produce, co-write and star in an update of The Odd Couple, which "centers on two mismatched roommates, messy Oscar Madison and neat freak Felix Ungar." Perry will star as Madison, and will also share writing duties with 90s sitcom aficionado Danny Jacobson (Roseanne, Mad About You, Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place).
Executive producers on the series include Perry and Jacobson, as well as Carl Beverly (Justified), Sarah Timberman (Elementary), and Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum (Two and a Half Men).
No word on when the show is expected to begin production, but CBS has given the project a script commitment. The series is also an in-house production from CBS Studios, which marks it as one of the more important comedy projects currently in development at the network. The fact that it's based on an iconic Neil Simon property is just the icing on the lucrative cake, so I'm predicting CBS will give this project every opportunity to succeed. I suppose we'll see soon enough. But Perry is certainly a talent worth giving an opportunity, as he's a genuinely funny and gifted comedic performer, even if he has a veritable graveyard of first season cancellations under his belt.
