Matt Smith Reportedly Returning to 'Doctor Who'

Is Matt Smith returning to Doctor Who? This is pretty much a story from the "I'll Believe It When I See It" Department, but it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility.

According to reports from a source for the Daily Mail, Matt Smith is negotiating a return to Doctor Who for a cameo in Series 8 this fall. Talks are ongoing with showrunner Steven Moffat, who is looking to give the Eleventh Doctor one final appearance alongside companion Jenna-Louise Coleman, who will now be starring in the series alongside the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

According to the source, "Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, is struggling to accept that Capaldi is still her Doctor when she receives a phone call from Matt, which he made prior to his regeneration. It sounds confusing but he is ringing the future from the past and wants to assure Clara this new man is still Doctor Who."

It is expected Smith’s cameo will air early in the Series 8 run this fall, which really can't come soon enough. Many fans miss Smith already, and I'm admittedly one of them. But as Rickey.org's resident Whovian, I'm beyond stoked to see what Capaldi brings to the role. He's a seriously outstanding actor, and if you'd told me five years ago that Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It would be The Doctor, I'd have filed paper work to have you sectioned. But it's a surprisingly terrific choice for the Twelfth Doctor, as Capaldi is adept at playing roles across periods of time. Hell, Capaldi is killing it right now as Cardinal Richelieu on BBC's The Musketeers. So yeah, confidence is high.

But that doesn't change how badly missed Smith will be. In the 50-year history of Doctor Who, Smith is one of the most popular actors to play the role -- and also one of the most successful. He is the only Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA for his performance, and his regeneration sequence in December was the most watched moment of television for Christmas Day, pulling in 10.2 million viewers for the five-minute sequence. I suppose we'll see if his cameo generates similarly impressive viewership numbers.
