Marvel Reveals Phase 3 Movies: 'Avengers 3', 'Captain Marvel', 'Black Panther', More

By Nick Roman ·

At a special event, Marvel officially announced its Phase 3 movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it includes a mix of expected projects and awesome surprises.

First up is Captain America 3: Civil War on May 6th, 2016, a reveal that came only after Marvel faked out the crowd by initially claiming the third Captain America movie would be titled Serpent Society.

Marvel president Kevin Feige announced the film, confirming that it would follow the Civil War storyline in which Iron Man and Captain America are on opposite sides of the war for superhero registration: "Events of the whole cinematic universe will make all governments in the world want regulation. Not so much about secret identity, but about who reports to who."

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans were on-hand as well, taking an adversarial pose in front of the film's logo, because Marvel is intent on showing DC they can't front on all this awesome...

Next up is Doctor Strange on November 4th, 2016. Although news leaked of Benedict Cumberbatch winning the lead role, Feige would not confirm that the Sherlock star had been cast, noting that if the casting had been made official, "we would have announced it today."

The next movies in the lineup are Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5th, 2017, Thor 3: Ragnarok on July 28th, 2017, and Black Panther on November 3, 2017. The latter film will star Chadwick Boseman in the title role, and it's possible the character will cross over into other Marvel films...

We then move into 2018, with Captain Marvel on July 6th, 2018, centering on the Carol Danvers version of the character, which already has the internet abuzz with casting speculation (Katee Sackhoff, please? PLEASE?).

Next is Inhumans on November 2nd, 2018, focusing on the titular race of superhumans.

And last, but not least, is...

A TWO-PART AVENGERS MOVIE!

Yes, Avengers 3 will be released in two parts! The Avengers: Infinity War Part One will hit theaters on May 2018, while The Avengers: Infinity War Part II will arrive a year later in May 2019.

The two-parter will presumably follow the six-issue comic book limited series of the same name from 1992, which centers on the war for the Infinity Gauntlet, which appears to be in the possession of Thanos.

Phase 2 comes to an end with The Avengers: Age of Ultron this May, and then we can begin looking ahead to Phase 3. But it's hard to contain the excitement this announcement is already creating. Marvel remains one of the most ambitious, exciting studios in the world.
