Marvel Confirms Benedict Cumberbatch Is Doctor Strange

Marvel has confirmed what we've all suspected: Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange.

The Emmy-winning Sherlock star will take on the role of Stephen Strange in the Phase 3 movie, scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. Directed by Scott Derrickson from a script by Jon Spaihts, Doctor Strange tells the tale of the titular neurosurgeon who "discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions" following a horrific car accident, because this is what happens when you crash a car, I guess.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige in a statement. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Cumberbatch is very high profile right now, so I don't blame Marvel for snatching him up. But even if he were a relative nobody, I still think they were smart to get him for the role. I think he's perfect for the part, and can bring a certain quirkiness that borders on threatening, which should add to the character's overt darkness. I'm already excited to see what he ends up doing in the role.

What do you think about this casting decision? If not Cumberbatch, which actor would you like to have seen cast? Sound off in the comments!
