Marvel Announces New Captain America on 'The Colbert Report'

Marvel is making some big shakeups. Earlier this week, it was announced that we would be getting a new, female version of Thor in an upcoming comic book series. This was followed by Entertainment Weekly unveiling a first-look at Ultron and his army in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. So how does Marvel top the last two news bites? By heading to The Colbert Report to make the next huge announcement.

Marvel CCO Joe Quesada appeared on The Colbert Report on Wednesday night to announce that Sam Wilson, formerly known as The Falcon, would be taking over as the new Captain America beginning this October.

This decision is the result of Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, losing his super powers during the course of his series, which prompted readers to begin speculating on which person would inherit the responsibility of the all-American hero. For many, Falcon was the frontrunner thanks to his recent popularity in April's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in which Anthony Mackie played the role.

The first issue with Wilson as Captain America will be released when Captain America #25, written by Rick Remender with art by Carlos Pacheco, hits shelves in October. This will lead into the launch of an all-new series, All-New Captain America #1 by Remender and artist Stuart Immonen.

With this latest change, Wilson becomes the seventh character to become Captain America, as well as the second of Captain America’s former sidekicks, as ex-best friend Bucky Barnes took over the role for a year after Rogers "died" following the Civil War arc. In addition, Wilson is now the second black Captain America after Isaiah Bradley, who, in the Marvel continuity, held the role even before Steve Rogers.

No word on if this will translate to any of the Marvel films, but I could see a scenario where Wilson gets to inherit the role of Captain America for a brief time in one of the movies if Steve Rogers is presumed dead through some crazy twist. Either way, I'm interested in what, if any, new changes Marvel will announce next.
