'Manhattan Love Story' Canceled By ABC
A little over a month into the start of the 2014-2015 broadcast year, the fall season has its first casualty.
ABC has canceled Manhattan Love Story, the Tuesday night comedy in which Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman pursue a relationship in the Big Apple (while having their every thought documented by voiceover narration).
The series pretty much bombed in its time slot, with the most recent episode bringing in just 2.6 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49.
Of course, the cancellation of Manhattan Love Story means double airings for its time slot partner, fellow freshman comedy Selfie. The 8:00 PM hour will feature two episodes of Karen Gillan-starring comedy, which has been consistently pulling better ratings than Manhattan Love Story. However, there is some concern that back-to-back airings of the show could burn out the audience. The most recent episode of Selfie raked in 3.8 million viewers for a 1.1 demo rating, which should be enough to keep it afloat into November sweeps, if only because ABC doesn't really have anything else it can air in that slot without resorting to reruns. That said, Selfie and Manhattan Love Story were scheduled to be preempted this coming week anyway by a Halloween special, meaning the new, hour-long block of Selfie won't begin until the following week, on November 4th.
Yet, while ABC is likely disappointed to have the first cancellation on network TV this season, it's actually been a pretty great season for them so far already. The network already has the highest-rated new drama this fall (How to Get Away With Murder) and the top new comedy (Black-ish). So it's not exactly gloom-and-doom over on the Alphabet network. With all that having been said, I do hope Analeigh Tipton is able to land on her feet and find a solid new gig soon. She's a great talent I'd love to see more, even in another comedy.
