'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner Denies Spin-Off Rumors

After the announcement that AMC would be splitting the final season of Mad Men in half like network-mate Breaking Bad, creator Matthew Weiner spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to deny rumors that his show would be adopting AMC's other new trend: spin-offs.

"There's no chance," Weiner said, regarding the likelihood of Mad Men receiving a spin-off series like Breaking Bad's spin-off Better Call Saul or the upcoming companion series for The Walking Dead. "No judgment against anybody else -- but this is it. This is the story. When it's done, it's done."

Regarding the split season approach AMC has settled on, Weiner says that while it wasn't his call, he sees it as an opportunity. "Every season is a new story, and I don't want to get bored but I also don't want to let the audience down," said the showrunner. "For me, I start over. And there's this kind of thing that happens with the audience every year where it's like they're very happy to see us back in the premiere, and when the new story starts around episode two they start getting antsy and then they get with it by episode three when they see it's a new story."

As for Sunday night's Emmy Awards, Weiner is anxious as always. "It’s just a matter of calming down, getting excited to see everybody and for me, I feel so lucky to get to go. It doesn’t happen to everybody," said Weiner.
