Lost "Whatever Happened, Happened"

WTF

I got confused by this episode... so I watched the conversation between Miles and Hugo again, and it's kinda making some sense. (Video at the end of the recap).

So this was a Kate-centric episode again, which thankfully was better than the last one.

We learn the secret message Sawyer gave Kate on the helicopter before he jumped and the circumstances of Kate's decision to go back to the island.

The message was: "Take care of my daughter". For those who are keeping tabs through the years, Sawyer has a daughter with Cassidy who was his love interest / victim in the classic episode "The Long Con". Kate tells Cassidy the truth about the island and they become BFFs. It turns out that Sawyer broke Kate's heart and Cassidy helps her get through it. OMG, Kate's storyline sucks. Anyway... Kate ultimately decides to go back to the island to look for Claire and leaves Aaron with his biological grandmother.

All this we learn in the aftermath of Sayid gunning down the young Ben Linus on the island. Now it gets confusing. So apparently, Ben did not die instantly. There is still a chance to save him. Juliet can't do it, so Sawyer asks for Jack's help. He refuses. So is Ben going to die?

Juliet suggests to Kate that maybe The Others can help. So Kate takes Ben to the perimeter where Sawyer meets her to help. They agree that they cannot allow a child to die, even if it is evil Ben. Interesting! That made me think: If I could travel back in time, would I allow someone who has wronged me greatly die as a child?

We then get resolutions about Kate's relationship with Sawyer, and Sawyer's relationship with Juliet (OMG he really loves her!), and we even cut to a quick confrontation scene between Juliet and Jack.

Anyway, Kate and Sawyer give young Ben to Richard Alpert who goes into a cave. Old Ben wakes up and sees Locke. End episode.

So what about this time travel thing? As Miles explains it, all of the events already happened, so there is nothing they can do to alter it -- even if they think they are altering the past. He is essentially saying that Ben did not die, even if it seemed hopeless at the time with Jack refusing to help -- because obviously they met him when Ben was older. He also goes on to say that after Ben turned that wheel around, "they" are now experiencing all these things "for the very first time" because "this is their present".

Hugo then stumps Miles by asking why Ben never remembered Sayid shooting him. And then we get a convenient dues ex machina when Kate and Sawyer hand Ben over to Richard. Richard says: "He'll forget this ever happened and his innocence will be gone." Okay. So Ben got a convenient mind-wipe... and is no longer an "innocent child".

At any rate, it looks like we will see how Ben was saved by The Others next week. Apparently, he also going to he "judged". LOL

I love Lost!
