Lost Season 6 - Episode 16: What They Died For - Recap

It's the last episode before the series finale of Lost on Sunday! And yes, I think I got some answers...

There are still a few plot details that needs to be resolved, but I think I got the overall theme of the story after tonight's episode.

From last week's story we learned about the origins at least of the man in black and the struggles between him and Jacob. The supernatural qualities of the island I think may never be explained, but at least tonight I got a better sense of why things were put into motion.

Jacob makes an appearance to Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley. He explains that it was his fault that there is a "smoke monster" and he brought all of them to the island to replace him as the guardian of the island. He added that he chose them specifically because they were flawed -- and as we know from the past six seasons, none of them had great lives off the island.

That's the basic premise. There have been many "visitors" to the island, probably by chance or otherwise, which have tinkered with the island in some way like the Dharma Initiative and always under the watchful eye of Jacob -- but the premise is the same: Jacob is the only one with easy access to the "white light" which powers the island -- and there is a "smoke monster" running around the island trying to kill him/get out/etc.

Maybe Jacob got tired, or he knew that because he himself could not kill the "smoke monster" -- somebody else needs to do it. That's why all these people are here on the island now -- at least our main characters. Everyone else seem to be incidental.

I'm at peace with this. Jacob manipulated everyone to go back to the island, but it still made sense because these people weren't happy outside of the island anyway. How very interesting that Kate's name was crossed out because she "became a mother" and finally had some sort of purpose outside the island.

Anyway plot:

Flash Sideways

It took me a while to realize, but apparently, Desmond is assembling some sort of A-Team!

He calls Jack in guise of airport personnel that they've found his father's body.

He scouts Locke again in school -- and after he is spotted by Ben, he beats Ben up! Which somehow rattles Ben's brains a bit. Did Ben remember that he was an evil person in "real life"? LOL

That kinda starts a chain because Ben ends up telling Locke that Des told him that Des was there to tell Locke to "Let go." Which then prompts Locke to go back to Jack and agree to take the spinal surgery.

Meanwhile, Desmond turns himself in to the LAPD so he can be locked up with Sayid and Kate. All three a transferred to a bigger facility -- and in the van Desmond gives Kate and Sayid a proposal: he'll get them out, but they promise to do one thing for him. They laughing agree, and then the van stops -- and Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) opens the door! She a crooked cop. LOL

Then Hurley comes driving in to give Ana Lucia her payoff. Desmond hands Kate a dress to wear... and the A-Team is off! Woohoo! Hope this is fun on Sunday.

Ben meanwhile gets to meet Alex's mother... Danielle! They have a heart to heart talk which I think triggers something in Ben on the island...

Island

Flocke is coming after everyone. At the old Dharma camp, Richard, Ben and Myles are looking for C4. They discover that Widmore and his assistant Zoey are already there. Zoey radios that Flocke is on his way.

Ben tells Widmore and assistant to hide in the secret closet and says he will confront Flocke.

Richard also says he will talk to Flocke, to give them time to run.

Myles apparently, doesn't stay and runs out of the house on his own.

Richard and Ben go out. Smoke Monster hits Richard -- which means he is dead. (That's it???)

Ben pledges his allegiance to Flocke and directs him to Widmore in the secret closet. Flocke kills Zoey.

Widmore tells them why he was there. Jacob told him to deliver Desmond as a last resort since Desmond is immune to the electromagnetism on the island.

Ben shoots Widmore! For revenge!

Anyhow... Jacob meets the other guys as I mentioned earlier... and then Jack volunteers to be his replacement. He drinks the sacred water.

"You're like me now."

Flocke and Ben go back to the well where Desmond was and Des isn't there. Flocke says he doesn't want Des killed anymore -- he wants to use Des to... destroy the island! Nooooo!

The series finale on Sunday starts with a one hour special at 7 pm and then "The End" begins at 8 pm.

Wow. I can't believe it's all going to be over.
