Lost - Season 3 - Episode 56 - Flashes Before Your Eyes

Desmond

SPOILERS

Something happened on Lost last night which is a departure from how the show normally goes about things. Instead of action on the island interspersed between a "flashback" of a character's life before the island, we get: island -- one big flashback -- island. And sometime during the flashback, I felt like I was watching unaired scenes from the Matrix.

Last night's Desmond-centric episode is sure to drum up the Lost troops once again, as the true nature of Desmond's "powers" are revealed. So after the hatch-incident, Desmond finds himself "living his life again" and has a recurring case of deja-vu. He remembers things that has happened to him in his past, including the island. Plus, in a scene reminiscent of the Matrix, Desmond encounters a woman who has a similar deja-vu experience as himself who tells him: "the universe has a way of course correcting" when Desmond tries do undo something he regretted in the past. I don't completely understand it, specially after the big reveal in the end. When we come back to the island, we find out that all this time (after Desmond wakes up naked in the jungle), he had been trying to save Charlie's life -- he stopped Charlie from being killed by lightning, and in this episode, he saved him from drowning (there's a previous episode I think where Charlie has a vision of drowning). Desmond saved Charlie, but since the universe will course correct, Charlie will die one way or another. This is the part which confuses me since this means that Desmond is living his life on the island all over again for him to have the deja-vu that Charlie will die. Is he Lost's Neo-anomaly? Another can of worms, damn this show. Hahaha.

Anyway, I think I will revive my old theory about Lost: everyone is dead, and the island is the place between life and the afterlife. Most of them will move on, but some, like Desmond at the end of this series will live and be rescued.

"Only fools are enslaved by time and space."
