The Lonely Island Are Making a Movie With Judd Apatow
One of the key factors in the viral resurgence of Saturday Night Live in recent years has been The Lonely Island: the trio consisting of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. Together, they were responsible for writing and, in some cases, performing such tracks as "Lazy Sunday," "D*** In a Box," "I Just Had Sex," "I'm On A Boat" and more. In short, the group has had success in TV and with music, with three hit albums to their names. However, the group is now headed for the big screen.
The Lonely Island will produce and star in a film for Universal that will be co-produced by Judd Apatow. Very little details about the plot have been unveiled, but we know it's set in "the world of music."
Schaffer and Taccone will co-direct, which makes sense given their experience behind the camera: Schaffer has directed the Samberg-starring comedy Hot Rod as well as the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn comedy The Watch; Taccone, meanwhile, directed SNL spinoff MacGruber, as well as episodes of Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which star SNL alums Amy Poehler and Samberg, respectively.
If the film comes anywhere near the quality of their songs and digital shorts, then count me excited. Here's hoping for a musical!
