Russia has come under fire for not being entirely welcoming to gay lifestyles. But the country will have to get used to gay athletes making an impact at the XXII Winter Olympics.
Ireen Wust, an openly bisexual speedskater from the Netherlands, won a gold medal in the women's 3,000 meters yesterday at the Sochi Winter Olympics. After her victory, Wust tweeted this photo of her celebration:

Wust came out in 2009, acknowledging she had a girlfriend. However, she eventually grew tired of fielding personal questions about her love life, and instead rededicated her public persona to her sport. This is the Dutch speedskater's third Olympic gold medal in the sport, which is among the most popular in the Netherlands. Wust is one of just seven open LGBT Olympians in Sochi, all of whom are women.
Congratulations, Ireen!
