'LEGO Movie' Directors Pass on 'Ghostbusters 3'
Phil Lord and Chris Miller will apparently not be bringing the Ghostbusters back to the big screen.
Amid rumors that The LEGO Movie directors had been in talks to direct Ghostbusters 3, reports are now surfacing that the duo has decided Ivan Reitman's shoes are too big to fill. Word comes from The Wrap's Jeff Sneider, who broke the news:
Hearing LORD & MILLER ended up walking away from GHOSTBUSTERS 3 job. They were the studio's choice but wanted to keep their options open...

Lord and Miller were more than just the top choice for the helmer's chair(s), they were actually a pretty damn good choice. Not only did they find critical and commercial success with The LEGO Movie, they've also directed the similarly successful Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, along with its upcoming sequel, 22 Jump Street.
This is another big hit to the production, which has been plagued not only by the loss of Harold Ramis, but also by Reitman's decision, in the wake of Ramis's death, not to direct the third Ghostbusters movie as planned. The film was slated to start production as early as this fall, but it looks like this setback could delay the start of filming. Hopefully, they get a director with a passion for the franchise, and not a mercenary-for-hire who merely churns out the project just to get it out on time. However, I wonder how much of a choice Sony is going to have if they wait any longer. Call me crazy, but maybe this is a sign that a third Ghostbusters movie just shouldn't happen.
