LeAnn Rimes has a new outlook on life: between her healthy music career, with a new album on the way, and an even healthier marriage to actor Eddie Cibrian, the country songstress is finally prepared to address the dark period in her life following her extramarital affair with her Northern Lights costar in 2009. That the affair was broken by Us Weekly makes it all the more fitting (or confusing, your call) that she'd go through the well-trafficked publication to break her silence.
Rimes, 30, told the magazine that she feels like she's been on "an emotional roller coaster" as of late. That emotional hardship resulted in the singer checking into a treatment facility for anxiety and stress.
"I went in and took care of myself because I was stressed, I was depressed and anxious, and I didn't know how to process everything," Rimes said of the decision to check into an in-patient facility in August 2012, citing how her "whole life has been out there for everyone to judge" since she was 13 years old. "Going away was something I really needed to do."
Naturally, Writing and recording helped her recovery in many ways. Rimes likened working on her upcoming album, Spitfire, to a form of "intensive therapy," as it dredged up a slew of feelings she wasn't sure she was ready to face.
"I think I opened up the can of worms for myself by writing this record," she tells Us. "There were a lot of things I didn't even realize I was feeling...I needed to go somewhere and really process all of that stuff."
The "stuff" to which she refers is the affair with her now-husband Eddie Cibrian, following their meeting on the set of the 2009 TV movie Northern Lights costars' tryst. Rimes hit rock bottom in the wake of Us Weekly breaking the story.
"I was feeling all these crazy emotions and feeling terrible about myself and was disgusted by myself and thought I was pathetic," she says. "Borrowed," one of the songs on her new album, addresses her feelings at the time about falling in love with a married man, as Rime sings, "I don't want to give you back."
"Sometimes it takes walking through those tough times to come out the other side stronger and wiser," Rimes explained. "I'm gonna make mistakes as I move on in life, but that's who we are, and I'm fortunate that I've grown a lot and I'm proud of who I am now...it's a good place to be.
"I'm the strongest I've ever been," the singer adds. "I'm the most honest with myself that I've ever been, I'm the most secure I've ever been about myself and my family, and I'm the most confident I've been in a really long time."
