Lauren Bacall Dead at Age 89

Today has brought about another tragic loss in the Hollywood community.

Lauren Bacall died Tuesday morning of a stroke in her home in the Dakota, the Upper West Side building that overlooks Central Park in Manhattan. She was 89.

Bacall was a Hollywood icon as much for her personal life as for her work. Her romance with frequent co-star Humphrey Bogart was the stuff of Hollywood legend, as their 11-year marriage was as stormy and tumultuous as it was passionate and iconic. However, it's her on-screen work that lives on, with her roles in such classic films as The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948).

Bacall earned her sole Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces, in which she played Barbra Streisand’s mother. She would lose the award to Juliette Binoche for The English Patient. However, the Academy corrected the slight by awarding her an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards ceremony in November 2009 “in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures.” She is survived by her children Sam, Stephen and Leslie.

Our condolences go out to Bacall's family and friends at this time. She was a true icon, and a talent for the ages.
