Kristin Chenoweth is Maleficent in Disney Channel's 'Descendants'

Move over, Angelina! Or not, whichever is good for you. Yes, while Angelina Jolie will be playing the iconic villain Maleficent in the summer movie with the awesome trailer and the even awesomer Lana Del Rey song, it's not a role she'll have entirely to herself this year.

Kristin Chenoweth is headed to Disney Channel to play the role of Maleficent in the network's upcoming original movie Descendants. The movie synopsis reads like some kind of superhero team-up flick, except all the heroes are paying for the misdeeds of their generally lousy parents...who are villains...from Disney movies (I guess since the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a part of Disney now, it only makes sense):

Kristin Chenoweth (Rio 2, Glee) will embody Maleficent, who butts horns with her daughter Mal (Dove Cameron). Directed by Kenny Ortega, the tale is set in a present-day idyllic kingdom where the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s Beauty And The Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters.

Among the cast for Descendants are Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce and Mitchell Hope, working from a script by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott. The movie is scheduled to begin production next month for premiere sometime in 2015, making this the second high-profile original movie Disney Channel has in the works for next year. And hey, they both involve a lot of meta commentary on the nature of movies! Could Disney Channel be the most subversive network on television?

Okay, maybe not, but still. This sounds like fun.
