Kristin Armstrong Wins Gold for United States - Women's Time Trials - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results
American Kristin Armstrong took her place on the throne as the Queen of the Women's Time Trial at the London 2012 Olympics. Read on for all the medal results.
Unlike the road race, in the time trials, the riders are racing the clock instead of each other. Riders are separated by at least a minute on the course, with the idea being that riders must win on pure speed and skill, rather than the strategy involved in the road race, where drafting and team work play a big part in the race.
Much shorter than the Road Race, the time trial is essentially a 30 minute sprint that requires speed, skill, pacing and a lot of grit. The reward, a medal and a place on the throne (really!).
Russian Olga Zabelinskaya held the top spot for much of the race, but the gold medal slipped through her fingers as the last two riders to go surpassed her time and claimed the top two spots. It was an exciting finish. At 39 years of age, Armstrong became only the second woman to win gold in the Women's Time Trials twice.
Results:
Gold: Kristin Armstrong - United States
Silver: Judith Arndt - Germany
Bronze: Olga Zabelinskaya - Russia
Congratulations to all the medalists!
