Kris Allen Interview: On Tour with Boyce Avenue in New York (VIDEO)

Kris Allen was in New York City last Friday as the opener for the band Boyce Avenue at Terminal 5. I had a chance to speak with him about his career as an artist on an indie label and the challenges he faced running his own business.

He shared with me his experience opening for Boyce Avenue and raved about their fans for being in the moment during the performances. I watched the show after our chat, and I have to say, though he's the opening act, this was the best Kris Allen concert I have ever witnessed, thanks in part to the incredible fans of Boyce Avenue.

The setlist of the main act was around 70% cover songs, so it seemed proper that Kris, who won Idol singing cover songs, added a few to his set as well. His version of Sia's "Chandelier" was one of the best covers I've heard live. I think that deserves a recording or at least a YouTube version for posterity.

Kris is always a pleasant interview and he and his wife Katy, who was his tour manager for a couple days, made me feel like I was one of the family. It seemed like only yesterday that he won American Idol and this was a great way to reconnect since I last saw him in concert two years ago.

In an exclusive, Kris told me that one of his songs from his current album Horizons will be featured in a TV show soon. No word yet on which one or what show, so follow Kris on Twitter for updates.

UPDATE: "Lost" aired on The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, December 4, 2014

Horizons is currently available for download on iTunes and a portion of the proceeds will go to Music Empowers. Kris has been known for his humanitarian work and for the tour he is working with World Vision raising money to build water wells in Zambia.
