'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Reboot Is In the Works

Everything old is new again in the Xerox Generation: I Know What You Did Last Summer is getting a reboot.

Yes, it's true. A reboot of the 1997 horror film is in the works from Sony Pictures, with producer Neal Moritz returning to the franchise, which continued with the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and the 2006 straight-to-video slasher I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Oculus director Mike Flanagan and its writer Jeff Howard will also produce and write the script, which will be based on the 1973 Lois Duncan novel of the same name, and not the original 1997 film.

Starring Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, I Know What You Did Last Summer was characteristic of the late 90s obsession with the slasher film genre -- well, except that this was a pretty damn good movie, considering the genre. I'm not entirely sure it's ripe for a remake, but it's hardly a terrible idea or anything, since the movie isn't such a classic that a reboot would necessarily offend anybody. Sony Pictures is aiming for a 2016 release date, so hopefully they put a little more time into getting this right than they did I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
