Katie Ledecky Wins Gold Medal - Women's 800m Freestyle - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results

Hearts are breaking all over Great Britain today, as American teenager Katie Ledecky stuns the world and wins the gold medal in the Women's 800m Freestyle at the London 2012 Olympics.  Read on for race details and the rest of your medal results.

15 year old Katie Ledecky was considered to be something of an unknown coming into this, her first major international competition, but no one really expected her to contend for the gold.  Instead, the expectations of a nation were on the shoulders of world record holder Becky Adlington, who was expected to bring home the gold for Great Britain.

Ledecky took the race out at a blistering pace and was under Adlington's record all the way up to the last 25 meters or so.  Ledecky opened up a huge lead on the field and held on to it for the entire 800 meters of the race.  Adlington ended up battling it out for silver medal position, but exhausted by her attempt to match Ledecky's place, she ended up taking bronze instead.

A disappointing day in the pool for Team GB, but an exciting one for Team USA, as Ledecky brought home an unexpected third gold on the night.

Results:

Gold: Katie Ledecky - United States

Silver: Mireia Belmonte Garcia - Spain

Bronze: Rebecca Adlington - Great Britain

Congratulations to all the medalists!
