Kacey Musgraves Gets Censored; Might Be Feuding With Miranda Lambert?
Kacey Musgraves had not one but two controversies at Wednesday night's CMA Awards.
Performing her new single 'Follow Your Arrow' in a bright yellow dress, it encourages being yourself, celebrates being gay and gives the thumbs up to smoking weed. You might think that it's a little too 2013 for country music, and you'd be half-right. The line "roll up a joint" was censored 3 times during the performance, despite the fact that "crack" was left to air. Fans were furious that their golden girl would be censored, particularly on a song that celebrates individuality and people doing what they want, and Kacey herself was confused.
"Well, I guess for some reason, people feel the need to censor that word, yet they decide to leave the word ‘crack’ in there," She commented. "I’m not really sure why. Honestly, to me, ‘Follow Your Arrow’ is just a really positive anthem, encouraging people of all kinds to do whatever makes them happy across the board. I was really happy to be up there with my band and being a part of this."
Kacey also won New Artist of the Year on the night, but while she was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Miranda Lambert was the one to take it home. Unfortunately, the camera was on Kacey when the winner was announced, and she was sporting a perhaps sour expression, leading social media and blogs to ask what she was so grumpy about. Many people wondered whether there was a feud between Kacey and Miranda, particularly since Miranda had such success with 'Mama's Broken Heart', a song Kacey co-wrote and wanted for herself. There's also the possibility Kacey was just really stoned, or the more likely explanation that she just isn't used to cameras being on her 24/7. She's still pretty new to the fame game, although this blowing up will probably be a sharp reminder of how much poise you must have in public.
Still, a good night for her, and I suspect many more successful ones to come.
