Justin Chatwin, who played Emmy Rossum's love interest on Showtime's hit drama Shameless, will be leaving the series after three seasons.
Producer John Wells made the announcement during the TV Academy Emmy panel for Shameless in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, an announcement confirmed by a Showtime representative. However, while Chatwin's exit has been made official, the representative states the actor could return for one or two episodes in season four.
At three seasons, Chatwin has played Jimmy, the conman forced to turn straight, for one season more than his U.K. counterpart James McAvoy, who played a similar role in the original series on which the Showtime adaptation is based. Though Jimmy's death at the end of the third season is presumed though not depicted, the character has a penchant for disappearing in high-pressure situations, so he could easily return.
Showtime renewed Shameless in January, thanks to the drama's year-over-year improvement in ratings. Season four will premiere in 2014.
