After news that Jeremy Renner is unlikely to return as Hawkeye for the sequel to 2012's record-breaking blockbuster, The Avengers, there have been concerns that the status of other cast members could be in flux.

However, while some roles are easily replaced, there are others that are vital to the health of the franchise. Take Iron Man, for instance.

Director Joss Whedon has made his loyalties clear, declaring that there will be no 'Avengers 2' if Marvel is unable to come to an agreement with Robert Downey, Jr. for the sequel.

“He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond, ” said Whedon, in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I have no intention of making 'Avengers 2' without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that.” Whedon continues, “I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected.”

In early May, discussions commenced between Marvel and the headlining star to return, though there is still no official offer on the table just yet. Many expect Downey will return, but the actor has made it clear his salary would either have to remain at 'Avengers' levels or increase, if he is to return for a sequel.

Downey's contract status is far from settled, but having the director on his side could do wonders for his leverage. I suppose we'll find out soon enough. Given how well Iron Man 3 has been doing, Robert Downey, Jr. is already approaching the level of wealth of his fictional counterpart.
