Josh Trank to Direct 'Star Wars' Spinoff Film

Star Wars: Episode VII is currently filming, with set photos leaking over the past several days, including everything from new creatures and aliens to our first look at the Millennium Falcon and an X-Wing. But there's plenty of other news going on in the Star Wars Universe (you know, other than the casting of an Oscar winner and Brienne of Tarth): a director has been named for one of the several Star Wars spinoff movies in development.

Chronicle director Josh Trank has been hired to direct one of the upcoming spinoff films, although which character it will center on has yet to be revealed.

"The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood," said the 30-year-old Trank in a statement on StarWars.com. "The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

Trank joins Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards as the latest director to be given one of the Star Wars spinoffs. If we had to guess, we'd assume the two spinoffs are the widely rumored films centering on Han Solo and Boba Fett, respectively, since they're among the two most visible characters in the Star Wars Universe, and should be easy to build a film around. But I'd love to see the concept expand back into The Clone Wars, or even farther back, into The Old Republic. Not sure how soon the movie will go into production, since Trank is busy with 20th Century Fox's reboot of Fantastic Four starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell, with Toby Kebbell as Doctor Victor Von Doom.

Regardless of when the movie goes into production, or what its subject will be, I think Trank's record speaks for itself. Chronicle is fantastic, an action movie that privileged character over straight plot. Count me among those excited for the spinoff.
